Page 1 of 2 – Resolution No. 2026-64 CITY OF CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA RESOLUTION NO. 2026-64 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING SENATE BILL 1422 RELATING TO THE PROTECTION, RESTORATION, AND MANAGEMENT OF CORAL REEFS AND UPDATING THE CITY’S 2026 LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES TO EXPRESSLY INCLUDE SUPPORT FOR THE PROTECTION OF BISCAYNE BAY AND CORAL REEFS WHEREAS, the City of Coral Gables has long recognized the importance of environmental stewardship and the protection of Biscayne Bay and surrounding natural resources; and WHEREAS, healthy and effectively managed coral reef systems provide substantial public benefits, including flood mitigation, climate resilience, protection of coastal properties, reduction of risks associated with natural disasters, and support for marine ecosystems; and WHEREAS, Senate Bill 1422 seeks to further protect, preserve, restore, and manage coral reefs within the region, recognizes coral reefs as an important nature-based solution, and includes enhanced accountability and penalties for damage caused to coral reef systems; and WHEREAS, the City Commission finds that legislation supporting coral reef protection and restoration is consistent with the City’s longstanding environmental values and policy efforts, including the City’s support for the protection of Biscayne Bay; and WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to formally support Senate Bill 1422, or similar legislation, and to direct the City’s state legislative advocacy team to advocate in favor of such measures; and WHEREAS, the City Commission further desires to update the City’s 2026 Legislative Priorities to expressly include support for the protection of Biscayne Bay, coral reefs, and related marine life;
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CORAL GABLES: SECTION 1. That the foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution upon the adoption hereof. That the City Commission hereby supports Senate Bill 1422, or similar legislation, relating to the protection, restoration, and management of coral reefs, and recognizes coral reefs as a nature-based solution that promotes flood mitigation, climate resilience, and coastal protection, and directs that the City’s 2026 Legislative Priorities be updated to expressly include support for the protection of Biscayne Bay, coral reefs, and related marine life, and have the City’s state lobbyists and legislative advocacy team to advocate in support of Senate Bill 1422, or similar legislation, during the 2026 legislative session. SECTION 3. That this Resolution shall become effective immediately upon the date of its passage and adoption herein. PASSED AND ADOPTED THIS TWENTY-FOURTH DAY OF FEBRUARY, A.D., 2026.
