STATEMENT OF HOW THE PROPOSED ARTWORK ADDRESSES BROADER CITY URBAN DESIGN GOALS Alberto Cavalieri, an artist recognized for his architectural interventions and for his large-scale works in public spaces. He continues to redefine the cultural environment through his monumental work that captures the relationship between humanity and nature. His sculpture will be visually effective for the public from the many perspectives, In addition, it will be visually stimulating because it will not only beautify the space but also fit perfectly into the surrounding landscape. Upright and unchanging, Alberto Cavalieri's sculpture "Themis", inspired by Greek mythology, embodies the principles of law, order and justice. PLANNED MAINTENANCE OF THE PIECE Cast iron is a strong and durable material for outdoor environments; however, it requires basic maintenance to ensure its preservation and prevent corrosion. The following actions are recommended: 1. Periodic cleaning (every 2–3 months): remove dust, dirt, and debris using a dry cloth. 2. Application of protective coating (every 2–3 months) 3. Maintenance after extreme conditions: After heavy rains, hurricanes, or prolonged exposure to moisture, perform an additional inspection and cleaning as needed. ARTIST STATEMENT Ever since I began making art, I’ve been interested in the physical and mechanical aspects of objects, as well as in the three-dimensional forms they may take. I believe that sculpture is the best means to solve the conceptual problems I deal with and to turn them into tangible forms. I approach my work with intensity, because I want it to be oversize, both in terms of ambition and actual dimensions. My sculptures are part of a research process in which each stage leads on to the next. I work in a variety of different ways and my creative process transforms and evolves as I go along. My work focuses on challenging our physical laws and altering our sense of logic, in bending and transforming materials to create the impression that the works are not man-made. I create sinuous, contorting steel forms that outline spaces in an organic way; forms that can be easily tied together amalgamate with architecture and seem, at times, to be levitating. I like the idea that my pieces enter a complex dialogue with the spaces they occupy and create off-rhythms that unsettle the horizontal and vertical order we presuppose with our Cartesian conception of space. To create the sculptures, I have had to develop my own techniques and tools and tried out different processes that range from hi-tech, numerical control to old fashioned and elementary steelwork. Metal allows me to create an overriding paradox between matter and form: to create sinuous forms that are full of life and movement, in clear contrast to the rigidity and structure of the material –steel– I use to make them. Knots are one of the abstract forms I use, and their multiple symbolisms increase the scope and resonance of my work. Knots imply human activity and they have different connotations in terms of how they are used; connotations that could even be contradictory and/or ambivalent. Man makes knots to solve countless functional situations: they are a metaphor for life.
