Page 1 of 2 – Resolution No. 2024-81 CITY OF CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA RESOLUTION NO. 2024-81 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA, COMMITTING TO ACHIEVING VISION ZERO, ZERO ROADWAY FATALITIES, BY 2050. WHEREAS, the Vision Zero program is dedicated to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries and has been implemented in numerous areas throughout the United States and worldwide; and WHEREAS, the Vision Zero program is a systematic approach to implementing proven safety countermeasures and policies that focus on safer people, safer roads, safer vehicles, safer speeds, and adequate post-crash care; and WHEREAS, data from the U.S. Department of transportation shows that vulnerable road users like pedestrians, bicyclists, and those in wheelchairs made up approximately 20% of all roadway fatalities in 2021 nationwide; and WHEREAS, data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle’s most current annual report (2022) illustrates that vulnerable road users like pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorists have experienced significant increases in accidents from the prior year: 7.09%, 14.01%, and 5.35% respectively; and WHEREAS, the City of Coral Gables has endured as many car crash fatalities in the first quarter of 2024 as any of the past seven years; and WHEREAS, the City of Coral Gables has recently suffered the loss of a promising University of Miami student, Daniel Bishop, who was killed in a car accident while he was riding a scooter;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISION OF CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA: SECTION 1. That the foregoing “WHEREAS” clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution upon adoption hereof. SECTION 2. That the City Commission hereby directs the City Manager to develop and implement an Action Plan consisting of studies, community outreach, pilot programs, and infrastructure improvements to achieve Vision Zero by 2050. SECTION 3. This Resolution shall become effective upon the date of its passage and adoption herein.
