Commission $300,000 art sculptures for SW 136 Street roundabouts

DATE: July 11, 2023 TO: The Honorable Mayor and Members of the Village Council FROM: Yocelyn Galiano, ICMA-CM, Village Manager RE: SW 136 Street Roundabouts Artist Recommendations At its June 13, 2023 meeting, Council heard a presentation regarding several artists that could potentially be commissioned to create two sculptures to be installed at the new roundabouts being built by Miami-Dade County at SW 136 Street and the intersections of SW 67 Avenue and Old Cutler Road. The funding set aside for the two sculptures is $300,000. After some discussion, Council directed the Village Manager to work with the Village’s art consultant, Alana Perez, to submit a final recommendation for preferred artist choices at the July regular meeting. Based on a review of the artist list that was presented to the Village Council, it is recommended the Village Council authorize the Village Manager to enter into formal negotiations with the following two artists - Kevin Barrett and Davis McCarty. Attached for your general information are photographs of past works by the artists that provide insight on each artist’s style. The negotiations would require each artist develop a concept for the sculpture within the agreed parameters and price restrictions. Said concepts will be brought before the Council for final approval at a future date. If the Council authorizes the negotiation of agreements and prices are finalized, the Village Manager will then schedule the enabling resolutions for execution of contracts at a future Council meeting. /yg /yg
