DATE: January 6, 2025 TO: The Honorable Mayor and Members of the Village Council FROM: Yocelyn Galiano, ICMA-CM, Village Manager RE: Proposed Art for SW 120 Street and Old Cutler Road During the October 8, 2024 meeting, the Village Council was presented with proposed beautification project concepts for the area at SW 120 Street and Old Cutler Road which included elements such as new signage, median curbing, improved pedestrian crossings for the shared use path, landscaping and public art. The Village Council agreed to proceed with the concept that among other improvements included installation of a large-scale sculpture by artist Michael Szabo as an entry feature at that location. To proceed with the construction plans for the design of the overall improvements to that intersection, it is necessary to choose the actual art piece so that all the necessary electrical and foundation work can be included in the construction design documents. To that end, the Village commissioned more detailed concepts for the area from Mr. Szabo in line with an art piece he previously designed called “The Veil” as presented to the Village Council in October. Below are three concepts the artist submitted for consideration like “The Veil” and a fourth concept like an art piece the artist installed in Port St. Lucie called “Relate”. Concept #1: A straight wall of glass and metal with varying finishes. Estimated cost $130,000. The lighting opportunities are more interesting. Estimated cost: $160,000 Concept #3: Similar to # 2 but with the curves turned outward, creating a different flow in the viewing area. Estimated cost: $160,000 Concept #4: This piece is like a piece installed in Port St. Lucie called “Relate”. It could incorporate some stainless steel and colored metal. Could provide greater height than the other three concepts and include a seating element in the center. Estimated cost: $120,000. Based on those submissions, I hereby respectfully recommend the Village Council approve the attached revised art piece concept and authorize the Village Manager to execute an artist contract for an amount not to exceed $200,000. The contract will cover: x Design, engineering, fabrication, transportation and installation of the metal and glass sculptural forms, x Design specification and engineering of the footer(s) for the sculpture forms including stamp and seal from a FL licensed structural engineer, x Provision of anchor bolts, pattern templates and installation instructions for cast-in bolts for sculpture footers and design, and x Coordination with the Village’s landscape architect and civil engineers for landscape and hardscape integration. /yg
