ROUNDABOUT ARTIST SELECTION PROPOSAL PREPARED BY ALANA PEREZ CULTURAL AFFAIRS CONSULTANT VILLAGE OF PINECREST VILLAGE OF PINECREST ART IN PUBLIC PLACES The following presentation features six, US based artists who are best known for outdoor monumental installations. The artists or their representatives have been contacted to assess the artist’s interest in creating a site-specific, monumental installation for one of our two traffic circles currently under construction. The range of pricing for each artist, indicated on their bio sheet, has not been negotiated. We believe in most cases they are higher than the final contracted price would be. Section one contains a short bio and examples of their work. In section two, we have placed the work of two of the artists, side by side, to give you a sense of how these two installations, in close proximity, might compliment each other. Please note that each installation would be designed specifically for the Village, from concept to final product. DAVIS MCCARTY SOFTLAB MICHAEL SZIVOS SOFTLAB $200,000-$300,000 Available now; lives in New York About the artist SOFTlab is a design studio based in New York City. The studio combines a research-based design practice with an interest in how technology, craft, and materials come together in ways that explore the boundaries between art, architecture, other disciplines, and the public. They are a mix of artists, listeners, geeks, dreamers, teachers, believers, programmers, and architects. Above all, they are curious designers. Their curiosity is driven by the idiosyncratic nature of the world and the expectations people have of how they engage with that world and each other. They see technology as an opportunity to enable new perspectives of where they might find unexpected possibilities, playfulness, and beauty in an increasingly complex world and ultimately, they strive for their projects to elicit a sense of wonder. SOFTLAB MICHAEL SZIVOS RAFAEL BARRIOS RAFAEL BARRIOS $ 200,000 - $250,000 Available now; lives in Miami. About the artist Rafael Barrios is a Venezuelan sculptor, born in Baton Rouge, LA in 1947. RAFAEL BARRIOS KEVIN BARRETT KEVIN BARRETT $175,000 - $225,000 Available now; lives in Massachusetts About the artist Kevin Barrett has been surrounded by abstract sculpture and painting his entire life. He comes from a family of artists, including his father, Bill Barrett, who is also a sculptor. At the age of 14, Barrett’s father taught him how to weld. His grandfather, Stan Barrett, was a world renowned abstract painter who studied with Fernand Léger, and who founded the Art Department at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Barrett set up his first studio in Miami, FL, where he worked restoring sculptures by Joan Miró, Louise Nevelson, Willem De Kooning, and Pablo Picasso for a private collector. During this time, he was also creating his own work and showing extensively in the area, in galleries such as the Joy Moos Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. After eight years in Miami, Barrett returned to New York City, where he maintained a studio in Brooklyn for over twenty years. In 2012, he relocated to Duxbury, MA, where he currently works and resides with his wife and three daughters. KEVIN BARRETT WILLIAM BARBOSA WILLIAM BARBOSA $150,000 - $200,000 Available now; lives in Miami About the artist Barbosa is a self-taught sculptor who worked in metallurgy before devoting himself to the visual arts. Born in Colombia, he has lived and worked in Venezuela since 1975, where he began to experiment with volume and sculptural spaces, using boundary lines to limit and unfold modular structures. The use of metal in his pieces, particularly aluminum and steel, gives his work a remarkable industrial aura. Barbosa co-founded the MADI Group (Movement-Abstraction-Dimension-Invention) in Venezuela, inspired by the original group founded in Buenos Aires in 1946. Their works emphasize the pure forms of non-figurative geometric art with constructive and universal values. His works are part of important collections of public and private institutions in Latin America, the USA, and Europe, among which are the Museum of Latin American Art (Los Angeles, USA); Collection of the City of Geneva (Switzerland); Museum of Contemporary Art of Zulia (Maracaibo, Venezuela), and MADI Museum & Gallery (Texas, USA). WILLIAM BARBOSA ALBERTO CAVALIERI ALBERTO CAVALIERI $175,000-$200,000 Available now; lives in Miami About the artist Alberto Cavalieri was born in Caracas in 1969. He is a Venezuelan artist who, throughout his long career, has achieved recognition for his monumental sculptures and public works integrated into architectural forms. His oxidized sculptures and digital drawings deal mostly with the paradox between form and matter, as well as the duality between the essence of a material, and its visual possibilities. His work is focused on the physical and mechanical aspects of objects, as well as their three-dimensional forms. For Cavalieri, sculpture is the best means of resolving and turning conceptual problems into tangible forms. He has been working in visual arts, primarily in sculpture, since 1994, following the completion of his studies in industrial design, mechanical engineering and art in Caracas. His career as an artist has been prolific and his work has been exhibited both in Venezuela and abroad. Cavalieri’s sculptures can be seen in numerous private and public collections and sculpture gardens across the Americas.
