RESOLUTION NO. 2026- A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE OF PINECREST, FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF HB 1241 AND SB 1152 REQUIRING HANDS-FREE PHONE USE WHILE DRIVING; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, distracted driving poses a serious threat to public safety and is a leading cause of motor vehicle crashes resulting in injury and loss of life; and WHEREAS, national safety data demonstrates that the use of handheld mobile devices while driving significantly increases crash risk and is more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol; and WHEREAS, recent studies show a continued rise in driver interaction with mobile screens, further increasing roadway dangers; and WHEREAS, the Village of Pinecrest is committed to protecting the safety of its residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, and has experienced the impacts of distracted driving on local roadways; and WHEREAS, hands-free driving laws have been proven effective in reducing distracted driving crashes and improving overall traffic safety in states where such laws are in effect; and WHEREAS, advocating for policies that promote safer driving practices is consistent with the Village of Pinecrest’s responsibility to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of its community;
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF PINECREST, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. That the Village Council hereby expresses its strong support for legislation mandating the use of hands-free devices while driving and urges the Florida State Legislature to pass such legislation to enhance road safety and protect lives. Section 2. The Village Clerk is hereby directed to transmit this Resolution to the Governor of Florida and the Florida State Legislature to demonstrate our commitment to reducing distracted driving and improving the safety of our roadways. Section 3. That this Resolution shall be effective immediately upon adoption. PASSED and ADOPTED this 20th day of January 20, 2026. Joseph M.
