Resident raises traffic safety concerns at Kendall Drive and US 1 intersection

From: Ramon Diez To: Priscilla Torres (OVC); Ariel Meyer; Joseph M Corradino Subject: Very dangerous intersection Kendall Drive and US 1 Date: Tuesday, January 6, 2026 10:29:48 PM Attachments: image.png image (2).png image (1).png Greetings, I Wish to discuss the very dangerous intersection on Kendall Drive and US 1 on the Council meeting of January 20, at 1800  This is what I wish to discuss on the meeting : Please if possible the images to be projected for all to see I am very concerned that a pedestrian is going to be hurt or killed crossing this very dangerous intersection. We discussed the problem and ways to potentially mitigate an accident were a pedestrian crossing that intersection will be killed or badly hurt The majority of pedestrian-vehicle accidents at intersections are caused by human or behavioral errors:  Driver Failure to Yield Right of Way: This is one of the most frequent causes. Drivers often fail to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, especially when making right or left turns. Distracted Driving: Drivers who are on their phones (texting or talking), eating, or otherwise not paying full attention to the road may not notice a pedestrian crossing until it is too late. Running Red Lights or Stop Signs: Impatient or impaired drivers who ignore traffic signals can strike pedestrians who are crossing legally with the "walk" signal. Speeding: Excessive speed reduces a driver's reaction time and significantly increases the severity of injuries if a collision occurs. Impaired Driving: Both drivers and pedestrians under the influence of alcohol or drugs have impaired judgment and slower reaction times, leading to a higher risk of fatal accidents. Poor Visibility: Accidents often occur at dawn, dusk, or at night, or during bad weather (rain, fog), when it is harder for drivers to see pedestrians, especially if they are wearing dark clothing. Pedestrian Negligence: Pedestrians can also contribute to accidents by crossing Almost all drivers ignore this sign turning right on to Kendall Drive going East , as you can see , the intersection is obscured by the AT & T sign and the bushes underneath. There is very poor visibility of the intersection in question  Drivers can not see the intersection turning right secondary to landscaping under the AT & T sign  This is the intersection that we spoke about , it is very dangerous to cross with the drivers turning towards the right onto Kendall drive going east bound . Frankly , most people are distracted and text while driving.  as you can see from this image , the markings on the asphalt are faded and hard to see We also spoke about building a bridge that is needed to cross US 1 from the East side of US 1 at the Metrorail site  . There has been a bridge already constructed by the University of Miami ,at the U of M Metrorail station site ,  after 2 students were killed in a motor vehicle accident . Mr Corradino and I have spoken several times , but I have not heard anything back  Common ways pedestrians get injured or killed in Motor Vehicle Accidents ( MVA's ) are : Because pedestrians have no physical protection against the impact of a vehicle, the resulting injuries are often severe or fatal. Common injuries include:  Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): These can range from concussions to severe skull fractures and internal bleeding, often with lifelong effects. Broken Bones/Fractures: Injuries to the lower extremities (legs, knees, pelvis) are extremely common upon initial impact, while injuries to the upper extremities, head, and neck can occur if the pedestrian is thrown onto the vehicle's hood or the pavement. Internal Injuries: The force of the impact can cause internal bleeding, organ damage (e.g., ruptured spleen), or punctured lungs, which can be life-threatening if not treated immediately. Spinal Cord Injuries: Damage to the spine or spinal cord can result in chronic pain, mobility problems, or permanent paralysis. Lacerations and Soft Tissue Damage: Deep cuts, sprains, and strains are common, which may require surgery or extensive physical therapy.  Key takeaways : The aforementioned intersection is extremely dangerous , driver routinely ignore the " Yield to pedestrians " sign  The yield sign is hard to see, we spoke about lighting the  perimeter of the sign with solar powered red LED  The paint on the intersection floor is faded and hard to see , it will be easy and inexpensive to re-paint  The bushes by the ATT sign need to be removed and substituted with low lying ground cover plans to improve visibility  The intersection continues to be very dangerous to cross.
