Of the 21 birds examined, 12 were males and 9 were females. All were examined endoscopy to verify the sex. Interestingly, a few were not what they were perceived to be, sexually, so the practice of scoping every bird will continue. The birds that proved to be females were simply banded, applying a red band to the left leg, and recovered from anesthesia. The birds that proved to be males were vasectomized, banded, applying a blue band to the right leg, and recovered. All of the birds recovered uneventfully and no complications, surgically or anesthetically, were experienced. In conclusion, the project feels to be every bit as successful as hoped, and maybe even more so since every bird trapped is being positively identified as to male or female, giving the village a better understand of absolute and relative numbers.
