PINECREST |FLoRiDA ] VILLAGE OF PINECREST Education Advisory Council MEETING MINUTES January 20, 2026, 9:15 a.m. Pinecrest Community Center / Pine Room 5855 Southwest 111 Street Pinecrest, FL 33156 1. Welcome and Introductions The meeting was called to order by Vice Mayor Jerry Greenberg at 9:20 a.m. 11. Presentations Gale Nelson of Big Brother Big Sister a. Gale Nelson is introduced by Vice Mayor Greenberg. Mr. Nelson gives a history of big brother big sister and explains community programs. b. Mr. Nelson expresses a desire to partner with the Village of Pinecrest and the Pinecrest schools to bring Big Brother Big Sister to the community. Nelson compares the different programs including the school to work program, and school based mentoring programs. . The group discusses the programs, and Mr. Nelson answers questions regarding logistics of implementation within the village. 11l Reports/Updates a. Principals’ Updates: 1. MPSH (Principal Dobbs) gives a brief update on recent accolades including wins and advancements for sports, and mentions upcoming events; Mr. Panther fundraiser, juniors attending college tours, etc. 2. Howard Drive Elementary (Mrs. Diaz) gives an update of a recent meeting to advocate for Howard drive in the school of hope changes. Mrs. Diaz mentions that HDE will be sending representatives to Tallahassee to continue to advocate for HDE. Diaz gives an update of recent accolades and events at HDE. 3. Palmetto Middle School (Mrs. Valero) gives an update on students attending spelling bee, new clubs to PMS, Shrek the musical, and construction updates. 4. Palmetto Elementary (Presented by Mrs. Valero) lists recent activities happening at Palmetto elementary including music accomplishments, upcoming tour, and recent acceptance into art shows by students. 5. School Board Report: Luisa Santos gives an update for the school board, welcomes her new chief of staff Johanna Ralsten-Cox. 1. Santos mentions the improvement of graduation rates across D-9. Santos reminds the group of upcoming ‘a night in D-9” event and invites everyone to attend. 2. Mrs. Santos brings up the topic of the shared use agreement with the village and mentions that the conversations is ongoing and the groups are working toward a solution on the shared use of village and school fields. 3. Mayor Cindy Lerner asks a question about School of Hope and what dictates the decision to claim a school to be considered for the school of hope program. c. Region Report: 1. Ana Othon mentions that schools are finishing up OMO testing and gearing up for Iready tests. 2. Othon mentions that the Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) meetings have begun and thus far have shown no proposed significant changes to Pinecrest Attendance Boundaries. d. District Report: 1. Khristal Gooding gives notice of an upcoming CPR and AED training day (see attached flyer). 2. Gooding gives a brief update on the legislative session, mentioning the tracking of 90 bills. Specifically, the district is monitoring HB 6023, SB424 and HB1543 which are all related to School of Hope. 3. Gooding provides recommendations on how individuals and groups can make an impact on the legislative session in Tallahassee. The recommendations include sending emails and letters, calling, and leveraging any community organizations that people are involved in to continue to reach out to lawmakers. e. Legislative Update: 1. Nancy Lawther provides an extensive update on the legislative session, and the bills that apply to education in regard to public and charter schools. 2. Similarly to Mrs. Gooding, Nancy provides the group with examples of ways to make a difference in the legislative session. She encourages the group to get in touch with law makers, send groups of PTA, parents & students to Tallahassee, by sending in comments online, or register to speak at sessions in person. 3. Nancy mentions event ‘Dade Days’, an event with a meet and greet with local law makers, and the opportunity to get to know them and where they stand on particular issues in a less formal setting. f. PTA/PTSA Reports: 1. Palmetto Elementary PTA — Welcomes families for upcoming school tour and mentions upcoming fundraising event ‘Fun Fest’ on 2/21/2026.Pinecrest Elementary PTA echoes recent January 20, 2026, 2025 EAC Meeting Page 3 of 3 accolades from Mrs. Fraginals. MPSH PTA reminds the group of a general PTA meeting on February 5 at 5:30PM and welcomes the group to attend. g. Library Updates: 1. Ellen Book gives an update for a library event occurring outside of Pinecrest at the Main Library. Notably, the Local Authors Book Fair, a free event featuring local artists, keynote speakers, kids activities and more. = Pinecrest Gardens Updates: 1. Lacey Bray mentions the close of the 12" annual student art contest, with 158 entries and 83 accepted into the show with a few works from Pinecrest Schools. Bray reminds the group of the upcoming Art & Design Fair January 24/25 and February events including Space Night & Parents Night Out. i. Pinecrest Parks and Recreation Updates: 1. Dany Alberty provides construction updates for Coral Pine, Veterans’ wayside, and Aleyda Mas parks. Alberty mentions upcoming events including the vintage car show, on 2/28/2026 and the sold-out Daddy and Daughter Dance. j. Village Council Report: 1. Vice Mayor Greenburg Gives an update on the banner restrictions for schools, and mentions that we are working toward a solution for schools to display various types of banners.
