Organization Name Health Information Project, Inc. (HIP) Organization Mission HIP’s mission is to empower high school students to tackle the health crises of their generation. Overview of Organization HIP is an innovative, peer-to-peer comprehensive health education program for high school students. HIP addresses critical health topics such as depression, eating disorders, obesity, anxiety, suicide, stress, bullying and abuse. The program’s impact has been validated by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. During this school year alone, HIP will train over 3,000 11th/12th grade peer educators who will teach over 60,000 9th grade students in public, private and charter schools across Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe and Pinellas counties. Recently, the HIP founders presented the innovative HIP model with Superintendent Alberto Carvalho (former superintendent of Miami-Dade and current superintendent of Los Angeles) at The School Superintendents Association national conference in Nashville. During the past two and a half years, kids have been dealing with a lot of physical and mental health struggles because of the pandemic. HIP is a solution to the nationwide mental health emergency among children, adolescents and young adults. You can learn more about HIP at www.behip.org. Program Name HIP Program Implementation at Miami Palmetto Senior High School Program Details In 2009, HIP’s founder, Risa Berrin (a native Village of Pinecrest resident), saw a void in the health education space – the traditional, archaic health class model was in desperate need of innovation. Risa felt it was time to disrupt the traditional health model. Students needed practical, reliable health information and health resources. HIP was the solution. Unlike many programs that partner with schools, HIP is not run by the adults. HIP is run by the students at each school. HIP trains 11th and 12th graders to go into 9th grade classrooms to have discussions about critical physical and emotional health topics. With a strong 13-year track record, HIP is the first, and remains the only, comprehensive peer-to-peer health education program in high schools in the US. Since 2009, HIP has taught over 370,000 9th graders and trained over 18,000 11th and 12th grade student peer health educators. HIP is now a leader in addressing the pandemic’s mental health crisis impacting teens. Kids have been through a lot–homelessness, food insecurity, parents/caregivers losing jobs, family and friends dying of COVID-19, witnessing of domestic violence at home in quarantine, disruption of usual social/school activities, feelings of isolation at home with virtual schooling and increases in depression/anxiety. In order to tackle the learning loss brought on by the pandemic, the stressors and distractions that get in the way of students’ lives must be addressed first. Miami Palmetto Senior High School was the first high school to participate in the HIP program 13 years ago! Since then, all of the M-DCPS high schools and several private schools have followed Palmetto’s lead! At Palmetto, HIP has become a very popular program for the upperclassmen to participate in and the spots that become available each year are truly sought after. They apply in their sophomore year and commit to their junior and senior years in the program. HIP is a leadership development program where students are trained in public speaking, classroom management, discussion facilitation and curriculum knowledge. These are skills that they will be able to use in high school, college, their professional careers and beyond. Principal Dobbs, Mrs. Joyce Brislawn (HIP’s faculty sponsor) and Mrs. Julianne Farkas (9th grade AP World History teacher), have been incredible supporters and advocates for the HIP program since the beginning. HIP would be truly grateful for the support of the Village of Pinecrest and we thank you for your time and consideration. -Valerie Berrin Chief Operating Officer -Risa Berrin Founder & Chief Executive Officer Program Costs/ Grant Request Curriculum Materials - $1,200 Training Materials - $1,000 School Health Campaign (banners, posters, HIP TIPs) - $850 Peer Health Educator Shirts- $550 Health Resource Portal - $750 Individualized School Portal - $650 Total Grant Request - $5,000 From: Yocelyn Galiano (OVM) To: Priscilla Torres (OVC) Subject: FW: Village of Pinecrest Grant For Nonprofits Date: Monday, November 14, 2022 2:02:01 PM Attachments: HIP.Village of Pinecrest Grant.November 2022.pdf Include in Dec agenda. We do not have an application per se. What we typically ask for is a letter that makes the funding request and explains what the funds are sought for/in support of. Once I have the request in writing with supporting documents as you may wish to submit, I would put the matter on a future Council agenda for their consideration. Let me know if you have any lingering questions. I look forward to receiving your funding request soon.
