Invasive Argentine black and white tegus are appearing in Brevard County. Officials urge residents to report them.
An invasive lizard that can grow to nearly 5 feet long is turning up in Brevard County, and local officials are asking residents to report sightings rather than try to catch the animals themselves.
The renewed attention follows a public warning posted June 12 by the city of Cape Canaveral , along with additional local sightings reported this spring. The animal involved is the Argentine black and white tegu, a nonnative reptile that wildlife officials say likely entered Florida’s wild through the pet trade.
