Tallahassee and Leon County should hire a city/county staff archaeologist.
When out-of-towners ask me why I have lived in Tallahassee and Leon County for 54 years, I proudly place our excellent and well-managed parks near the top of the list.
But there is one facet in the management of our locally owned public lands that has room for improvement – the protection of cultural and archaeological resources. We have historically relied on experts from the Florida Division of Historical Resources or the National Park Service, as we did in the recent mapping of city-owned New Hope Cemetery and the Capital City Country Club burial ground.
