Five years ago, the Surfside collapse spurred the “most aggressive” safety reform in Florida history. It’s not been a smooth ride.
It was the middle of a hot summer night in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida , when the Champlain Towers South, a 40-year-old 12-story beachfront condo with 136 units, partially collapsed on June 24, 2021.
Security footage of the tragedy filmed from nearby buildings shows the eastern part of the condo suddenly crashing to the ground and turning into dust and rubble in mere seconds, in an accident that for months remained inexplicable.
