Monticello, Florida shows how Americans put accents on history
Monticello reflects Jefferson’s legacy in name and ideals, even as its pronunciation evolves across regions and generations in American life.
Some say Mon-ti-SELL-o, others say Mon-ti-CHEL-o, and a few say Mon-ti-SELL-uh — but all agree: the name Monticello honors Thomas Jefferson, the Founding Father, not the Virginia plantation where he spent most of his adult life.
It is not a coincidence that there are at least 15 communities across the United States that call themselves Monticello. It is a deliberate tribute to Jefferson the person and his ideals.
