After nearly two hours of debate in St. Petersburg on Tuesday night, one issue had not come up: how the city’s next Mayor would navigate Florida’s new restrictions on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in local government.
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed SB 1134 earlier this year, prohibiting counties and municipalities from funding, promoting or taking official action related to diversity, equity and inclusion . The law also voids existing programs, policies and ordinances tied to those efforts and allows municipal officials who violate the law to face removal from office.
