As a parent, I still hear the R-word too often | Opinion

If we’re still using intelligence as a punchline, we haven’t moved forward.

It’s become easy to recognize the words we’re not supposed to use. The r-word, once common in casual conversation, is now widely understood to be offensive and demeaning. Most people know better. Most people would never say it—at least most.

It shows up in comments, captions, political attacks, and everyday conversations - used to dismiss, insult, or diminish. It sounds more clinical, more acceptable, even more precise. But the intent behind it hasn’t changed. It still reduces a person to a single metric. It still draws a line between who is valued and who is not.
