For Tallahassee retiree, lifetime of creative learning leads to painting

Thomas Mitas credits much of his artistic growth to the instructors and artists he met at the Tallahassee Senior Center.

For many artists, creative practice begins with a formal education or a carefully planned career path. For Thomas Mitas, painting grew from something much simpler: a lifelong curiosity and a desire to keep learning.

That spirit of curiosity is on view in his current solo exhibition through COCA’s Art in Public Places program at the Tallahassee International Airport. Titled “Struck by Fancy,” the exhibition brings together a selection of works that reflect a lifetime of observation, experimentation and care.
