Cuba is a place I long to know, a place my father longs to visit, a place my abuelo is content to never see again.
There is a wood burning on the wall of my New York City apartment. It's a simple island scene. I see it every day: a farm in the foreground, complete with a tall palm tree and barbed wire fence, and mountains on the horizon.
It’s the only thing I own from Cuba, the place that raised my grandfather, the place he fled as a teenager in the 1960s when Fidel Castro took over the nation.
