PPD Chief, Santa Rosa Sheriff fear tax cuts may mean fewer officers

Pensacola Police Chief Eric Winstrom and Santa Rosa Sheriff Bob Johnson are worried tax cuts may hinder their ability to fully staff their agencies.

Early versions of a sweeping proposal to slash property taxes for Florida homeowners included protections to ensure funding for public safety agencies wouldn't be impacted.

However, those protections did not make it into the final version of the tax reform amendment going before voters this November. If it passes with 60% or greater voter support, municipalities around the state expect to see their property tax revenue fall by millions annually, if not tens of millions or more.
