Free speech group: FIU can't punish students who protest ICE
A free speech group says Florida International University violated the First Amendment by punishing students for a silent protest.
Florida International University students who silently protested with matching T-shirts that said "ICE OFF FIU" were charged with conduct code violations. Now a national free speech group says that violates the university's obligation to the First Amendment .
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) wrote in a June 18 letter to university officials that not only does FIU need to drop its case against the students, but it needs to revise its code of conduct to comply with constitutional protections for free expression.
