Lakeland weighs one-year ban on large power users such as data centers
The Lakeland proposal would temporarily ban all large-scale industrial projects that would have a peak electrical usage of more than 50 megawatts.
Lakeland officials will have a law drafted to impose a year-long ban against hyperscale data centers or other large industrial developments expected to consume large amounts of electricity.
Commissioner Guy LaLonde, acting as the city's mayor pro tem at the June 12 agenda study, proposed a one-year moratorium on new applications for large-scale data centers — or large industrial projects —that would have a peak electrical demand more than 50 megawatts.
