Southern Baptists weigh new immigration resolution at meeting
Immigration is one issue among several that delegates of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination will consider, but among its most important.
Two decades ago, Southern Baptist leaders like Richard Land set a tone for the denomination of embracing compassionate, Bible-driven immigration policy , seeing it not only as moral and just but the smart thing to do given the nation’s changing character.
Times have changed. Major evangelical voices that once stayed silent on the issue rather than criticize now spew harshness and rhetoric, said Ruth Melkonian-Hoover, a professor of political science at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts.
